PROLEGOMENON
It was one of those days when I was running my own institute at Narsing Rao peta in my place. I was just recouping from the self-imposed burden of having written 16 exams (B.A., Litt – SSS) in a row and one Entrance Test (AUCET – Andhra University Common Entrance Test). Someone told me that the results of the Entrance Test would be published that day. I was too lazy to go out to buy any newspaper. It was at 6 a.m., and Murali (one of my students) came into the class room all smiling, with a newspaper in his hand. I was reading Kafka at that time. Murali knew my hall ticket number. He broke the news. I topped that test. The first ever so called First Rank in life!!! My Pavlovian reflex to that, as it had been the case with any of my other academic exploits, was…an utterance of I SEE.
So far…so good. The problems started when I decided to wind up my institute to go to university. I did not have proper opinion about the high school and the college where I studied. But, I had high expectations from and respect for UNIVERISITY.
Hence, I was literally in the seventh heaven. Had an abundance of dreams, gatecrashing their way into my dreamy world, rather world of dreams.
I would be among a group of diehard fanatics of English Literature and Language. I would be indulging in intellectual hobnobbing day in and day out. I would have access to mammoth of a library. I would be taught by professors whose didactic disposition would be awesome.
Ah! dreams, dreams and more dreams.
It was the Counseling Day. I was sitting there in Andhra University Convocation Hall with all the certificates required, except my Graduation Certificate, yet to be issued by AU Correspondence Courses.
Then there was this man who approached me enquiring about my name. I said Adi. He introduced himself as ONE of the Student Leaders of BC students of the University. And I, without my knowledge, was born into that manmade stratum of the society. He could get that information somehow. He started counseling me as to why we needed to be friends.
My first ever tete-a-tete with the disgusting side of the University! And, it was just the first one. This series is all about my University Days.
